In Memoriam: David Stern

San Francisco activist David Stern died on June 27, four years after he was given nine months to live. During that time, David worked ceaselessly to improve HIV treatment research and treatment access, and to expose the U. S. government's criminal neglect of the epidemic.

David was familiar with the importance of political activism long before his diagnosis. Since the early 1970s he had worked for the rights of California farmworkers to unionize through the United Farm Workers, for the independence of Puerto Rico through Prairie Fire Organizing Committee, and for the freedom of lesbians and gay men through Bay Area Gay Liberation.

Those experiences made him an articulate and respected member of ACT UP/San Francisco, in which he helped to organize the People With Immune System Disorders (PISD) Caucus and the Treatment Issues Committee. David's death is a serious loss of leadership and expertise for the AIDS community.
